Federated Farmers Executives Golden Lamb Award Finalists

Federated Farmers is thrilled to see two of the finalists for this years’ Beef & Lamb NZ Golden Lamb Awards are Federated Farmers Meat & Fibre provincial chairmen.

“Hamish Buchanan and Richard Morrison are proving they are more than farmers, they’re politically engaged and now showing they are at the top of their game in breeding,” says Rick Powdrell, Federated Farmers Meat & Fibre Chairman.

“These awards follow stringent scientific testing so to have two of the four finalists, in the Best of Breed – Terminal Cross Section, as Federated Farmers Meat & Fibre Chairs is pretty exciting.”

Hamish Buchanan is Federated Farmers Meat & Fibre Chair for Tararua, breeding Highlander Primera/Texel lambs.

“I am really excited about being a finalist; I didn’t enter to win, I entered for information purposes, so this is a real bonus."

“It’s very easy being on farm and sending your lambs off on a truck and getting paid 14 days later but there’s very little objective measurement of what we produce. That’s why I entered, to get some objective measurement about what I am producing and reassurance that I’m on the right track with my breeding policies."

"I’m really looking forward to going to Wanaka and experiencing it.”

Carne Technologies General Manager, Nicola Simmons explains that each lamb leg entry is analysed using objective measurements for tenderness, colour and succulence, which are the ultimate factors that affect the consumer’s eating experience.

“New Zealand has a lot to thank the humble lamb for. It underpins much of our economy, providing jobs, schools, even the roads we drive on. This competition acknowledges lamb and gives it the credit it deserves. What better way to celebrate than to recognise what a fantastic eating experience lamb delivers.”

“Farming is a team sport, the farmer might be the captain but we need other players to play their part. A thanks needs to go to the drafter, truckies, processors, industry service providers, scientists, industry bodies and bankers who all help us to continue to produce a world class product.”

Rick Powdrell adds our guys are finalists in one of five categories, we wish all the finalists luck for the Grand Final in Wanaka onFriday 13 March. The event is packing some judging superstars with sporting superstars and Beef + Lamb New Zealand Iron Maidens, Lisa Carrington, Sarah Walker and Caroline Meyer (nee Evers-Swindell) on the panel.
