Response to AT’s announcement about carshare

In response to AT’s announcement about carshare

It’s great that AT is getting excited about carshare but we think the tender is a waste of money says NZ’s only operator of carshare in response to announcement that AT will launch tender process

Victoria Carter, Founder of NZ’s only carshare company, Cityhop says: There is nothing stopping another carshare operator from being here now. Car sharing is an excellent way to reduce car ownership/ cars on the road.

Cityhop won a tender to develop car sharing seven years ago. Since then it has battled Auckland Transport to get sufficient support, such as reserved carparks, to support growth in the market. Auckland has 8 dedicated parks; Sydney has 500. Limitations on dedicated parks is a major limitation to the growth of the market.

Despite this, Cityhop has developed the concept with over 2500 people and 250 businesses have been getting used to cars by the hour.

Now, without any advice to Cityhop, AT is seeking tenders, nationally and internationally, for additional carshare operators.

Cityhop has no problem with competition. But there is nothing stopping other operators coming in now?

If AT wants to get more people into car sharing then perhaps a more effective way to grow car sharing would be to engage with the current operator, as well as car manufacturers, electricity companies, bus companies, transport groups and sustainable business groups, to develop a collaborative initiative.
