Wairarapa and Hutt Valley DHBs to appoint separate CEOs

Friday 20 March 2015

Wairarapa and Hutt Valley DHBs to appoint separate Chief Executives

Wairarapa and Hutt Valley District Health Boards (DHBs) will appoint separate chief executives to help address the unique health challenges of their regions.

Dr Derek Milne, chair of Wairarapa DHB says there are different pressures and demands in each DHB.

“The Wairarapa has a mostly rural population spread over a huge geographical area, which bucked the expected trend and rose in numbers in the latest census,” says Dr Milne. “The make-up shows a growing trend of older people. Conversely, Hutt Valley’s mostly urban population has not grown as quickly with a rising number of younger people.”

Following a strategic meeting earlier this week and the decision of the joint chief executive of Wairarapa and Hutt Valley DHBs to step down at the end of April, the board of Wairarapa DHB agreed to recruit a separate chief executive. “We have our own unique health challenges and want to increase our own local decision making but remain committed to building on the collaborative gains of the last 3 years,” says Dr Milne.

Dr Virginia Hope, Chair of Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHBs says “We expect the three DHBs in the Greater Wellington region to continue working closely together to improve the health of our communities.”

Both chairs said their Board’s policies of working collaboratively with neighbouring DHBs, through arrangements which share clinical, management, planning and executive functions, have improved patient experiences, quality of care and productivity in the region, and joint initiatives will continue.

Recruitment for both CEOs will commence soon.
