DMS in support of KISP referendum
Post-harvest
kiwifruit operators and orchard managers DMS are welcoming
the announcement today of the interim results of the
Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project (KISP) referendum, which
spells out the future of the industry.
A record number of growers voted in the referendum – two thirds of growers representing 80% of production – which asked them to vote on the fundamentals of the kiwifruit industry, including increasing grower ownership and control of their marketer Zespri, strengthening grower control of the industry and enhancing the performance of the industry. The referendum also asked growers to reaffirm their support of the Single Point of Entry marketing structure.
Interim results reveal 90% of growers supported the outcomes of the KISP to lock in long-term grower ownership and control of the industry.
DMS chief operations officer Derek Masters says the announcement is exciting for the industry.
“We are pleased with the outcome of the referendum which clarifies future ownership, control and structure, and in doing so sets the platform for a positive and vibrant industry going forward.
“DMS has always been supportive of the KISP process, which supports one of our core company values of increasing profit for our growers. To have the industry united in its direction and vision for the future is fantastic – intent is the first step on the road to success.
“The industry has been through a number of challenges over recent years and it is great to see no passion or commitment has been lost towards building an ever-better industry. Kiwifruit growers have given a clear message over how they want their industry controlled and structured.
“Our company vision is to enrich the lives of our growers and our team, through exceptional management and performance, and live up to our brand promise of increasing grower profit. The referendum outcome ensures that we will be able to continue delivering our vision into the future, with a solid industry framework centred around growers to support that.
“Thank you to all the growers who voted and ensured their voice was heard.”
The final results of the referendum will likely be known by March 30, when all postal results have been accounted for.
