Fifth Grand Finalist Confirmed in ANZ Young Farmer Contest

Pete Fitz-Herbert is the fifth Grand Finalist to be named in the 2015 ANZ Young Farmer Contest.

The twenty-nine year old stock manager took first place at the Taranaki/Manawatu Regional Final in Palmerston North on Saturday 28 March.

Mr Fitz-Herbert went home with a prize pack worth over $10,000 including cash, scholarships and products and services from ANZ, FMG, Lincoln University, Ravensdown, AGMARDT, Silver Fern Farms, Honda, Husqvarna and Vodafone. He also won the AGMARDT Agri-Business Challenge.

Pete has been competing in the ANZ Young Farmer Contest since 2007 but this will be his first attempt at Grand Final level. Pete stock manages on the family farm and also runs a Dorset Down sheep stud. Pete is an active member of the Marton Young Farmers Club, where he enjoys networking with like-minded people and participating in a range of events.

Mr Fitz-Herbert is off to the Grand Final in Taupo, 2 – 4 July where he will battle it out for the Champion’s title and more than $270,000 in prizes.

The Taranaki/Manawatu Regional Final featured a strong group of contestants with plenty of knowledge and talent on display. The eight contestants were put through their paces in a variety of challenging modules touching on all aspects of farming from practical hands-on tasks to theory and business components.

Second place went to Nigel Will (28) of the Marton Young Farmers Club. He took home $2,900 worth of prizes. Nigel also won the Silver Fern Farms Agri-Sports Challenge.

Third place went to 22 year old Cameron Black of the Massey University Club. The Massey University graduate also took out the Ravensdown Agri-Skills Challenge. Fourth place went to Erica van Reneen (30) of the Marton Young Farmers Club; she also won the Lincoln University Agri-Growth Challenge.

Alongside the ANZ Young Farmer Contest Practical Day events New Zealand’s future farmers were in competition too in TeenAg and AgriKids competitions.

The top three teams from TeenAg and AgriKids competitions will compete at the Grand Final in Taupo 2 – 4 July.

The TeenAg competition was dominated by teams from Fielding High School with the top three teams all comprising of students from there. First place went to team “Mararua” with Dave Corpe and Bridget Henson. Second place went to “the Longridge Legends” with Jack Williamson and Daniel Warner, and third place went to “Robbo and Razza” with James Robinson and Rory Harrison.

The AgriKids competition was won by “The Extreme Team” made up of Monique Cheer, Harmony Kinloch and Emma Hockly from South Makirikiri School. “The Mak Bands” took out second place; the team was made up of Jessica Welch, Anna Simpson and Joshua Poppe who were also from South Makirikiri School. Third place went to the “Fordell Farmhands” team, made up from Georgina Bryant, Bridgette O’Leary and Seth Forlong, all students from Fordell School.

The 2015 ANZ Young Farmer Contest features 7 Regional Finals culminating in the Grand Final.
