March 2015 New Vehicle Registrations Strongest March Since 1984

David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association says “March registrations of 11,755 new passenger and commercial vehicles is the strongest March since 1984. March registrations for new vehicles were up 5% on March 2014 (up 517 units) and 8% year to date for the same period last year (up 2,394 units).”

Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of February with 15% market share (1,788 units) followed by Holden with 10% (1,151 units) and Ford with 9% market share (1,090 units).

New registrations of 8,075 passenger vehicles for the month of March were 81 units higher than for March 2014, and was the highest March since 1984. Toyota remains the market leader for passenger vehicles with 12% market share (970 units), followed by Holden with 10% (794 units) and Mazda third with 9% market share (732 units). The Toyota Corolla was the top selling passenger vehicle for the month of March with 4% share (291 units) followed by the Suzuki Swift with 3% share (274 units) and the Honda Jazz also with 3% market share (238 units).

New registrations of commercial vehicles for the month of March were 436 units higher than for March 2014, and the highest March since 1982. Toyota was the commercial market leader for the month of March with 22% market share (818 units), followed by Ford with 17% (629 units) and Holden third with 10% market share (357 units). The Toyota Hilux was once again the monthly top selling commercial model for March with 15% market share (548 units) followed by the Ford Ranger with 14% (514 units) and the Holden Colorado with 9% market share (346 units). Year to date, the Ford Ranger is the top selling commercial model with 14% market share (1,310 units) closely followed by the Toyota Hilux also on 14 % market share (1,298).

For the month of March, the Toyota Hilux was the top selling model with 548 units (5%), followed by the Ford Ranger with 514 units (4%) with the Holden Colorado with 346 units (3%).

The sale of sports utility vehicles segment remains dominant, reflecting international trends, with 31% market share for the month of February followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs with 22% market share and light passenger cars on 15%.

“New vehicle registrations for 2015 continue to reflect a strong economy, which is reflected in the continuing strong performance in the light commercial vehicle sector” said Mr Crawford.
