New Brighton Business Leaders Provide Solutions for council

New Brighton Business Leaders Provide Solutions for Christchurch City Council

The Christchurch City Council has recently released its draft Long Term Plan (LTP) and has called for consultation from the wider Christchurch community.

The LTP has been closely reviewed by the New Brighton Business and Landowners Association (NBBLA) as it is imperative to the recovery of New Brighton commercial district and the wider community.

A staged development for New Brighton is central to its rejuvenation. As the construction of the pier and the library have illustrated, solo projects cannot heal 30 years of economic decline. What is required is a succession of public works in order to attract capital investment into the commercial heart of New Brighton.

Regrettably the LTP in its present form does not in any way address the issues that face New Brighton. The reality is Council has chosen to ignore these issues rather than seriously examine them and budget accordingly. The level of exasperation with Council is such that our Manager, Paul Zaanen, made his own emotive speech at the Mayor in the Chair session on 25 March 2015.

What is frustrating for NBBLA is that prior to the release of the LTP, it made serious efforts to consult with both elected members and Council staff in order to deliver the New Brighton Master Plan which proposes a staged development process.

Please note that the Master Plan can be found at:

Given the failure of the LTP to provide an appropriate budget allocation for New Brighton, NBBLA has prepared our official submission to the LTP in the following video format:

In providing our submission to Council, NBBLA asks Council to seriously reconsider the LTP to ensure appropriate funding is allocated for New Brighton in order to better reflect the aspirations and vision of its vibrant, unique and caring community.
