Horizons of Insight Seminar

Māori Engagement in NZ's Extractive Industry- Horizons of Insight Seminar

Wednesday 27 May

The third of our Horizons of Insight seminars for 2015 is being held tomorrow, Wednesday 27th May, at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland.

Presented by NPM Lead Researcher Andrew Erueti, this powerful seminar will be looking at the complex issue of Māori interaction with the extractive and mining sector.

Andrew's research project Māori Engagement in NZ’s Extractive Industry: Innovative Legal Solutions explores how recent developments in international law provide insights into addressing the issues raised by the Extractive Industry for iwi and hapū.

In the past few years NZ has seen a sharp increase in Extractive Industry (oil, gas and mining) projects and activity. The government is strongly supportive of investment in this sector, but at the same time there have been high profile demonstrations against exploration and mining by environmental and iwi/hapū groups who are deeply opposed to these companies mining within their lands and rohe. It is also clear that some iwi have been trying to work with the industry, and in some cases have sought a treaty interest in the resource.

In this seminar Andrew will outline key developments in the area, as well as also talking about the innovations that have been adopted by Indigenous peoples and industry in other countries.
