Forum Congratulates Genesis Energy CEO for Safety Award

Forum Congratulates Genesis Energy CEO for Winning Safety Award

Congratulations to Albert Brantley, chief executive of Genesis Energy, who has been named the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum Executive of the Year at the annual NZ Workplace Health and Safety Awards.

The award recognises the crucial role of senior leaders, who through personal commitment to creating safe workplaces, have helped transform the health and safety culture in their organisations.

Albert’s exceptional leadership and determination to invest in training and safety systems is credited with transforming Genesis Energy from having an average-to-poor safety record into an organisation with best-in-class health and safety culture and practices.

Albert has led from the front, and has overseen an impressive turnaround in the company’s injury rates. In four years, the electricity generator and retailer has dramatically slashed annual recordable workplace-related injuries from 55 in 2011 to under two by early this year.

His initiatives include: setting performance objectives and indicators from the boardroom to the frontline; championing the introduction of a personal safety and behavioural training programme which has been completed by every employee and contractor; and driving the implementation of practical safety initiatives like GPS tracking and emergency alert systems for vehicles in high risk environments.

To recognise the need to get staff engaged in safety, he drove incorporation of health and safety targets into all employees’ individual performance ratings.

Albert also instigated ways to get the board actively involved in health and safety management, including developing a health and safety toolkit to ensure board members are well informed and supported.

Albert also backed a “Six Lifesaving Rules” initiative developed by employees and the company’s health and safety committees, and a “stop work” card for contractors and visitors which features a personal message from Albert empowering anyone to stop work if they see an unsafe situation.

Under Albert’s leadership, Genesis Energy volunteered to test WorkSafe NZ’s Safety Star Rating Scheme and he endorsed the foundation of the industry’s “Stay Live” group. He is also a member of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum.

This is the third year the Forum has sponsored an award to celebrate visible safety leadership, and this year the criteria was extended to also cover directors and senior executive team members as well as chief executives.

Congratulations also to the other finalists for the award - James Fletcher, Managing Director of OCS, and Natasha Possenniskie, Property Director at the Department of Corrections.
