Sofia Moore Launches Tailor-Made Ball Dress Service

Sofia Moore Launches Tailor-Made Ball Dress Service

Your graduation ball is a memory you’ll want to cherish for the rest of your life – but one you shouldn’t have to pay off forever.

Sofia Moore gives you on trend style and tailor made fit without the hefty price tags of local boutiques.

Sanna, David and Alex, started Sofia Moore five years ago at university to help solve a dilemma faced by millions of young women all around the world every year. “It was impossible finding a glamorous and affordable dress for my school ball,” Sanna confesses, sitting in their Sri Lankan design studio and creative hub – a cool, bright space in the center of the capital’s thriving garment district. “My friends and I often found nice dresses in stores but then had no choice but to find a tailor to make it fit properly, which made things even more expensive.” Like many others, she even experimented with ordering a dress online, but was “even more disappointed – not just by long delivery times, but because the dresses were often from China, were badly made, and looked nothing like the website photos.” That was the point when a problem inspired her to create a solution.

“We started Sofia [Moore] small, in Sweden, with a dream of growing the business to one day help girls anywhere,” says Alex, who, as Sanna’s long term boyfriend, smiles as he recalls seeing her agonize over finding a stylish, reasonably priced dress for their university balls. “I often had to lend her money to afford one from a boutique, but never thought they were worth it considering most weren’t even fitted to you.” David chimes in; “I don’t know, it feels weird paying for something that isn’t exclusively yours.” The young entrepreneurs nod in unison, as in the background two dresses take shape, meticulously stitched by careful tailors.

Why New Zealand? “It might sound like a strange next step,” laughs Alex, “jumping all the way from Europe [to New Zealand], but actually your seasonality is completely different, meaning we can stitch your dresses without juggling loads of orders from Europe at the same time.” It’s hard to imagine the calm tranquility we’re in bustling with energy as orders mount, especially when the tailors work so gracefully in the background. “Business is increasing rapidly, a lot of it from repeat orders from happy customers who like the way we design dresses, the way we run our business, and most importantly the way they feel on their special nights,” says David, who lights up as he talks at length about expanding the premises and how they’re hiring more skilled tailors every day; “we knew we had something, but never thought it would be going so well, so quickly.”

But at the end of the day, it comes down to product. One of the reasons for Sofia Moore’s success is its uncompromising attention to detail and dedication to superior quality. This is embodied in their ‘Perfect Fit Guarantee’, which allows customers to have any adjustments made at a local tailor for free. “There’s nothing worse than wearing a compromise to a big event. Sofia is about glamour, and confidence – about feeling your best because you look your best. That’s what she represents to us, and always will.” Alex, gazing at his girlfriend as she talks passionately about their company, sums it up in one word: ‘effortless’.
