Commission broadband price is still too high

Commission broadband price is still too high, but backdating a win

InternetNZ notes the Commerce Commission announcement today of a further, final Draft Determination on wholesale copper telecommunications service pricing, with few changes to its previous price decisions but a welcome change on backdating.

"InternetNZ remains concerned that these prices are still too high,” says Jordan Carter, Chief Executive of InternetNZ.

"Throughout this process, we have asked the Commission to justify its decisions and demonstrate its working. We will be analysing today's announcement to confirm that this price is justified.

"These copper broadband prices need to be fair for all parties," said Carter. " New Zealanders have an interest in the most affordable broadband possible; this needs to be balanced with the need for sufficient returns to justify investment."

InternetNZ is pleased to see that the Commission proposed not to "backdate" any pricing changes.

"Backdating harms Internet users' interests whichever way it is done. We are pleased to see it being taken off the table," says Carter.

The Commission has released 1,400 pages of detail with this Determination. InternetNZ will be analysing this over coming days to confirm that this balance has been struck.
