ViBeri announced as a top performer at New Zealand Food Awards

South Canterbury organic blackcurrant company, ViBeri, has been named a finalist in the Massey University New Zealand Food Awards.

The Awards recognise the top performers in New Zealand’s food industry, with almost 150 products from 79 food and beverage producers vying for an award.

Husband and wife owners, Tony and Afsaneh Howey, say they are thrilled with the recognition of their chocolate rolled blackcurrants as a finalist in the FOODBowl Novel Ingredients Category.

“We are a small, family-owned business with a huge passion for offering top quality New Zealand grown food products and we are so proud to be recognised as a New Zealand Food Awards finalist,” Tony says.

“It’s nice to know that we’re on the right track.”

Since 2011, the Howeys have been producing their ViBeri range: 100 per cent organic, artisan, super-foods, created from their finest, freshly picked New Zealand blackcurrants grown on their South Canterbury orchard.

“A decade ago we bought a property which had blackcurrants growing, and we soon realised that the future of the crop was in its healthy properties.

“That’s because there's increasing noise about the ‘superfood’ qualities of blackcurrants, particularly New Zealand blackcurrants, which have been internationally recognised as some of the best in the world for its health benefits, particularly its antioxidant levels,” Tony adds.

ViBeri has combined two nutritional powerhouses to create their Organic Chocolate Rolled Blackcurrants, using freeze-dried blackcurrants, rolled in the highest grade Belgian dark chocolate. It is 100% dairy free and gluten free and offer Kiwis a superfood indulgence.

Food writer Nici Wickes says this year’s NZ Food Awards have been impressed with the level of innovation in entries across the sector.

“The awards set the benchmark for professionalism and integrity when it comes to food and food innovation in New Zealand and local manufacturers recognise that.”

The NZ Food Awards winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Auckland Town Hall on Thursday, 17 September.
