Letting Space wins Supreme Wellington Airport Community Award

Letting Space, a Wellington group giving a helping hand to start-up organisations in Wellington, has won the Supreme Award at the Wellington Airport Community Awards (25 August).

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says Letting Space had supported a number of organisations that have become success stories and demonstrated what can be achieved through participation, innovation and enterprise.

One example of working closely with local communities was a large scale public art project title Projected Fields at Berhampore’s Macalister Park which aimed to unite all users of the park through a giant field painting. http://www.lettingspace.org.nz/projected-fields/

“This was very successful and engaged the community,” she says.

Letting Space works alongside a wide range of community groups wanting to test new ideas and has operated for five years in Wellington under the umbrella of the Wellington Independent Arts Trust.

“They founded the Urban Dream Brokerage which has been adopted by Dunedin and Porirua as part of an urban revitalisation programme,” Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says.

A new category Rising Star was won by the Community Comms Collective , a voluntary group of experienced communications professionals providing communications services to community organisations.

Mayor Wade-Brown congratulated the 65 nominees saying the standard was very high.

“Wellington is being very well served by community support organisations,” she says.

Art and Culture, Letting Space; runner-up, Film for Change Aotearoa; highly commended, Watercolour New Zealand Inc.; Education and Child Youth Development, Literacy Aotearoa Wellington; runner-up, Hack Miramar; Health and Wellbeing, Community Fruit Harvesting; runner-up Churton Park Walking Group; Heritage and Environment, Newtown Festival Organisers; runner-up Friends of Central Park; highly commended, Woodridge Planters and Wrights Hill Fortress Restoration Society; Sports and Leisure, New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils; runner-up WORD (Wellington Off Road Department); highly commended, South Wellington Seido Karate.
