Muffin Break goes one better in Coastlands awards

Shirley Buxton is no stranger to collecting an award for her popular Coastlands Shoppingtown Muffin Break Store. In the annual Coastlands Retailer Excellence Awards she has picked up the food category award before.

But now Shirley and her team have gone one better in 2015 winning the Supreme Award - in addition to the Food category for a second time of course.

More than 80 stores participated in the awards and when it came to selecting the very best the Muffin Break store came out on top from five other category winners.

Three judges reviewed all submissions from more than 80 participating stores and they also took in to account feedback from a mystery shopper.

Coastlands Shoppingtown CEO Richard Mansell says in 2015 there was a high standard of entries but Muffin Break was the stand-out winner and deserving of both the food and the supreme awards.

“When we looked at both store innovation and the evolving product offers from Muffin Break all the boxes were ticked for us. We’re a tight knit community in the centre and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say we’re all delighted for Shirley and her team for taking out the top award,” he says.

For their supreme win the Muffin Break team received a trophy, champagne and $2,000 from the Coastlands Board to be spent on store staff.

Shirley – who also owns a Muffin Break store in Palmerston North - hasn’t yet decided how to spend the prize money but says it will be something “experiential” for the team.

“I’m so proud of my front of house team who deliver excellent customer service every day and go the extra mile to help our customers. Plus our bakers do such a fantastic job of the presentation in the food cabinets which is a very important part of our offer.

“We’ve owned the store for more than seven years now and we have won the food category before. Taking out the supreme award to me clearly demonstrates our team work hard to improve every year, year on year.”

So what’s Shirley’s favourite fix from the winning store? “Like hundreds of thousands of Kiwis I love my flat white and I love to have a spinach and cream cheese muffin to go with it,” she says.
