Single resolve needed over Basin, says Chamber

All parties involved in the Basin Reserve issue must resolve to get together to find a way to untangle the mess there, says the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

Chief Executive John Milford says today’s decision by the NZ Transport Agency to not appeal against the High Court’s decision should draw a welcome line on the legal process.

“It’s now time to move forward to find a solution to the bottleneck because it won’t go away by itself. We need to get together to sort it out.

“Anyone not interested in solving the problems at the Basin needs to now get out of the way and let those of us who want to fix it to get on with it.

“We really do need to find a solution to this and we need to do it as soon as possible.

“We can’t afford to let Wellington stand still on this. Separating north-south traffic from east-west traffic around the Basin is essential.

“It’s about making vital improvements to a section of the city’s and the region’s transport infrastructure to improve connectivity, grow our economy, and boost jobs, not just in Wellington but in the lower North Island.

“An unclogged highway will achieve that.”
