Cameras on Canterbury for World Tourism Day

Cameras on Canterbury for World Tourism Day

The Christchurch and Canterbury region has been chosen to showcase New Zealand on a global scale for United Nations World Tourism Day on Sunday 27 September.

The world first social media relay initiative will follow sunrise to sunset across 75 locations in 60 countries, aiming to create a snapshot of different cities over the course of one day.

In the first event of its kind, Australian-based tourism group Helloworld has created the relay for World Tourism Day using Instagram as the social platform. The day starts in Samoa, finishing 24 hours later in the Cook Islands.

Australian photographer and social media influencer Sean Scott will be posting images of Christchurch and Canterbury to his 250,000 followers via Instagram, with a new photo posted every hour over the 12 hours of daylight. Starting at Lake Tekapo, he will travel via helicopter to Castle Hill to meet the hourly posting deadlines, before travelling to Christchurch city.

Local photographers are urged to join him for an Instagram meet up (InstaMeet) at6.00pm at the top of the Gondola for a unique chance to capture the sunset over Banks Peninsula, the Southern Alps, Canterbury plains, the ocean and city. Gondola tickets will be reduced to $5 for this event. During the evening, Sean Scott will share his tips in a question and answer session, before the group heads out to the hills from 7.00pm to 7.45pm. http://www.christchurchnz.com/world-first-instagram-relay-helloworldrelay/

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism (CCT) is working with Tourism New Zealand to support the Instagram relay.

CCT General Manager Marketing, Rowan Worner says World Tourism Day is designed to foster awareness of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. “It is fitting our region should be chosen to boost international tourism awareness and make social media history at the same time. Instagram is proving to be a powerful marketing tool and is the perfect real-time platform for inspiring travel,” she says.

New Zealand as a photographic destination was at the top of Sean Scott’s list landscapes. “You really can explore world class landscapes and be totally on your own. With some of the best cloud formations I’ve seen and the dramatic ever-changing weather, it really is a photographer’s dream,” he says.

Instagrammers from around the globe will be encouraged to push their own content to the site http://relay.helloworld.com.au/ during the World Tourism Day event using the hashtag #helloworldRELAY. All the images with this tag will be gathered into one photo essay and also made into a short film.

CCT will be holding its own InstaMeet on 17 October in Kaikoura with key international photographers, including Australian, Lauren Bath and New Zealander, Kylie Mulinder from Bare Kiwi.
