Award-winning vineyard, winery and restaurant on popular wine trail for sale
An established vineyard and winery producing award-winning, handcrafted wines and its restaurant in Matakana, north of Auckland, has been placed on the market for sale.
Mahurangi River Winery is strategically located at 162 Hamilton Road, only seven minutes from Warkworth, 40 minutes from Auckland and close to east coast beaches. It is also on the well-known Matakana Wine Trail - a route of wineries featuring premium wines in this small region. It is a popular lifestyle location and weekend getaway for Aucklanders and as a holiday destination for those from other parts of the country.
Encompassing 19.62 hectares, Mahurangi River Winery is a freehold going concern comprising of the land and business that has been placed on the market with Bayleys Warkworth via a tender campaign closing on November 12 unless sold prior.
The property consists of 4.7 hectares planted in chardonnay, albarino, viognier, roussanne, merlot, Malbec, cabernet, sauvignon and syrah vines, which supply a purpose-built winery building and restaurant. A covenanted native bush area covers 2 ha. Income streams are derived from wine sales, the restaurant and functions, particularly weddings, said Bayleys Warkworth salesperson Duncan Napier who is marketing the property.
Since opening in 1998, the vineyard has become well-known in the industry for producing hand-crafted wines and have won several medals at the Texsom International Wine Competition.
Mr Napier said a new owner could benefit from taking over an established business within the prospering wine industry.
“This is a quality business with an existing network of clientele that has earned its reputation in the industry for producing a premium product across a full range of wines,” he said.
“Mahurangi River Winery represents an exceptional opportunity to a new owner operator or investor given properties of this nature are seldom available, particularly in such close proximity to Auckland and its customer base.”
The winery has two trademarked wine names,
‘Field of Grace’ and ‘Pretty in Pink’, under its two
brands - Mahurangi River Winery and secondary brand
Maximus.
“Wine is crafted onsite, using a combination of traditional and modern techniques that capture the soul and seasons of the region, and production is restricted to ensure quality isn’t compromised,”
All vineyard equipment for wine making including vines and chattels, in addition to a workshop building, storage containers, morning tea room for staff and wine stocks from current and previous vintages are included in the sale.
The restaurant which won an architecture award in 2000, seats 50 diners inside and has capacity for a further 45 diners on the decks, with stunning views across the rolling hills and surrounding countryside. Fresh, local ingredients are the focus of the menu which features dishes such as pan roasted Cervena venison, confit juniper infused duck and the famed Mahurangi vineyard platter with assorted cured meats, seafood, cheeses and preserves accompanied by Matakana olive oil and fresh focaccia.
“This distinctive property also has potential for growth, allowing a new owner to individualise Mahurangi River Winery in their own way,” said Mr Napier.
“Opportunities exist to build a dwelling onsite, extend the scope of the vineyard and increase restaurant hours.”
The owners are available to assist the buyer with the transition period - offering their extensive wine industry experience and commercial industry knowledge.
