National guest nights for September 2015 were 5.2 percent higher than in September 2014, Statistics New Zealand said today.

"Most of the rise in guest nights for September was in the South Island," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said. "Domestic and international guest nights contributed almost equally to the rise."

For September 2015, compared with September 2014:
• North Island guest nights were up 2.4 percent, and South Island guest nights were up 10.2 percent.
• Domestic guest nights were up 3.9 percent, and international guest nights were up 7.7 percent.
• 10 of the 12 regional areas had more guest nights.
• All four accommodation types had more guest nights.

For the year ended September 2015, national guest nights were up 5.3 percent from the September 2014 year.

The trend for national guest nights continued to rise in September. Seasonally adjusted guest nights rose 2.0 percent in September, following no movement in August.
