Boutique Marlborough Winery Produces Best White Wine Buy
A family owned boutique winery’s 2015 Sauvignon Blanc has been deemed the best white wine buy of the year by renowned wine writer Michael Cooper.
The Starborough Family Estate Sauvignon Blanc has been labelled as a “five-star wine at a three star price”, in New Zealand Wines 2016: Michael Cooper’s Buyers Guide.
Cooper goes on to say; “this is benchmark stuff, hard to resist in its youth…this impressive wine is widely available at $20 and when sold on promotion it’s an absolute steal.”
Starborough Wines is owned by the Jones family, whose roots in Marlborough go back to 1865. With three vineyards in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, Starborough Wines are 100 percent estate grown, making the most of the individual terroirs.
The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of the ripe tropical-fruit grown at the Rapaura vineyard, and the more herbaceous, mineral laden fruit grown at two separate Awatere sites.
Viticulturist James Jones says the accolade was unexpected.
“We are so honoured by this and feel very humbled, especially when you consider that this latest book by Michael Cooper includes ratings and tastings for nearly 3000 New Zealand wines.”
The 2015 vintage has been described by many Marlborough winemakers as one of the best in years. With a cool start to the season, the long, warm summer that followed ensured intensity of flavour and aromatics.
Being labelled the best white wine buy of the year, is the latest in a string of accolades the Starborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 has achieved. It won Pure Gold at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Gold at the International Aromatic Wine Competition and the Marlborough Wine Show, plus was rated 19/20 by writer Raymond Chan.
Cooper says the quality of the latest release is no fluke. “Almost all the vintages I have tasted since 2008 have deserved a four-star rating or higher.”
Starborough Family Estate Wines also produce an award winning Pinot Gris with the 2015 taking out the Champion Pinot Gris trophy at the International Aromatics Competition.
Recently the Jones family have acquired the River Farm brand, which is used in the export markets of Europe, Asia and Australia.
