New Vehicle Market Heads for Another Record Year

David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association says

“The new vehicle market is racing towards another record year with sales in November up 4% on November 2014 and delivering a steady 5.3% growth for the year to date. New registrations of 11,620 vehicles is the strongest month of November on record. Year to date there has been 123,816 new vehicles registered in New Zealand compared to 117,758 this time last year, an increase of 6,231 vehicles.”

Toyota remained the overall market leader for the month of November with 22 percent market share (2,613 vehicles), followed by Holden with 11 percent (1,288 vehicles) and Ford also with 11 percent market share (1,261 vehicles). Year to date Toyota, Holden, Ford, Mazda and Hyundai respectively remain the top five overall market leaders.

New passenger car registrations of 8,115 vehicles in November were up 52 units (0.6 percent) on November 2014 sales of 8,063 vehicles, and was the strongest month of November on record. Toyota remains the market leader for passenger vehicles with 21 percent market share (1,712 vehicles), followed by Holden with 12 percent (998 vehicles) and Mazda with 9 percent market share (737 vehicles). Year to date, Toyota, Holden and Mazda remain the passenger vehicle market leaders. Toyota had the top two passenger models for the month of November, with the Toyota Corolla the top selling passenger model (652 vehicles) followed by the Toyota Highlander (295 vehicles), the Holden Captiva (291 vehicles) and the Mazda CX-5 (241 vehicles).

New commercial vehicle registrations of 3,505 vehicles in November were up 392 vehicles (12.6 percent) compared to November 2014. Year to date registrations are up 2,079 units (6.1 percent). Toyota was the commercial vehicle leader for the month of November with 26 percent market share (901 vehicles), followed by Ford with 22 percent (769 vehicles) and Holden with 8 percent market share (290 vehicles).

The Ford Ranger remained the monthly top selling commercial vehicle model with 690 vehicles registered, followed by the Toyota Hilux with 683 vehicles and Holden Colorado with 269 vehicles. Year to date the Ford Ranger remains the top selling commercial vehicle model with 17 percent market share (6,213 vehicles) followed by the Hilux with 14 percent (5,204 vehicles) and the Holden Colorado with 9 percent market share (3,274 vehicles).

The Ford Ranger was the top model overall for the month of November with 690 vehicles followed by the Toyota Hilux with 683 vehicles and the Toyota Corolla with 652 vehicles. Year to date the top selling models in order are the Ford Ranger (6,213 vehicles), the Toyota Corolla (6,049 Vehicles) and the Toyota Hilux (5,204 vehicles).

The sales of sports utility vehicles remains the dominant vehicle segment with 33 percent market share for the month of November and 34 percent year to date. The Pick-up/Chassis Cab segment was the second strongest segment with 22 percent for the month of November and 21 percent year to date, and the small passenger vehicle segment was the third biggest segment with 16 percent market share for the month of November and 15 percent year to date.

“Registrations of new vehicles year to date is already the second highest for any year, eclipsing the previous second highest annual total of 123,247 registrations in 1984, and is only 3,363 registrations behind last’s record of 127,179 new vehicles. The total for 2015 will break through 130,000 units for the first time by some margin.” said Mr Crawford.
