New Zealand Green Building Council welcomes new Chair

The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) is delighted to announce that Mary Jane Daly was elected as new Chair last night.

She replaces outgoing Chair Tim Hooson of Jasmax, who has led the NZGBC Board for the past two years.

Mary Jane Daly joined the Board of the NZGBC in 2011. She is also an Independent Director of Kiwi Property Group Ltd, Airways Corporation of New Zealand, and a Commissioner on the Earthquake Commission. Her last corporate executive role was Executive General Manager at State Insurance. Her previous roles include Chief Financial Officer for IAG in NZ, and Group Treasurer and Risk Manager at Fonterra.

She has a strong background in banking and finance in a variety of roles in New Zealand and the UK. She has held positions at the Bank of New Zealand, and National Australia Bank and Toronto-Dominion Bank in London.

Mary Jane paid tribute to outgoing Chair Tim Hooson. “Tim has made a vast contribution to the NZGBC over the past six years, including the last two as Chair. He leaves the Board in an extremely strong position with a clear strategy and sense of purpose.”

She said the NZGBC had carved a strong position across the commercial and residential markets, and she was looking forward to chairing the Board at a time when the organisation was poised for step-change.

“It’s a challenging time for the property sector with a great deal of growth and opportunity. It is crucial that quality and sustainability underpin our approach to development – the NZGBC has made great strides in putting it on the agenda, and over the next few years we’ll work to ensure industry has exactly the right tools it needs to make a difference.”

Last night NZGBC members supported changes to the organisation’s governance that reduce the maximum number of Board members from 14 to eight, along with the creation of an Advisory Group to provide counsel on specific strategic matters.

Ian Wheeler of Panuku Development Auckland has retired from the Board, while Matt Lee of WSP New Zealand and Mark Fraser of Hobsonville Land Company have left the Board but join the new Advisory Group.

“Ian Wheeler has been a hugely valuable Board member, providing strategic advice and an insight into property issues from a public sector perspective. We’re very grateful for his contribution,” Mary Jane said.

“While Matt Lee and Mark Fraser are no longer on the Board, the NZGBC will continue to benefit from their expertise through the Advisory Group. Matt brings a wealth of experience across the engineering and infrastructure sector, while Mark’s skill in residential development will be of great value. They will provide a rich resource for the NZGBC management team.”

The Advisory Group will be chaired by Board member Simon Wilson of RDT Pacific.
