Patagonia Chocolates Cafes Go Smokefree

Patagonia Chocolates Cafes Go Smokefree

Leading the pack, Southern Lakes business Patagonia Chocolates is making their four cafes Smokefree inside - and out.

Patagonia Chocolates owner Lorena Giallonardo said; “We are very passionate about providing our customers and staff with a pleasant and healthier environment in which to dine and work without being exposed to second-hand smoke.”

Patagonia Chocolates is implementing the move at its Arrowtown, Queenstown, Queenstown Airport and Wanaka cafes ahead of the Christmas holidays. To celebrate they’re offering a discount ice cream for children, along with giveaways from the Smokefree Bear Mascot at their Arrowtown and Wanaka cafes.

Local health organisations have welcomed the move with WellSouth Health Promotion Coordinator, Sarah Berger saying “This is a fantastic step by Patagonia Chocolates, they’re leading the way and we hope other cafes are encouraged to follow.”

Sarah who has worked with the Patagonia Chocolates team to implement the change says “Smokefree outdoor dining makes a more enjoyable environment for customers, protects both them and staff and helps to de-normalise smoking and those who are trying to quit.”

Last year marked the tenth anniversary of New Zealand bars and restaurants becoming Smokefree inside. Although the hospitality industry was initially cautious about the impact on businesses, ‘café culture’ has thrived and employment and profits in the food and beverage industry have increased even as the law came into effect.

However, evidence from New Zealand and overseas shows that patrons and staff are still exposed to harmful levels of second-hand smoke in outdoor dining spaces. People indoors are also exposed as smoke drifts from outdoor areas. In some parts of New Zealand councils are promoting voluntary and non-enforceable Smokefree outdoor eating areas, and these moves are supported by customers. This year Local Government New Zealand has also backed a Smokefree Outdoor Dining Remit to the Government.

“Smokefree outdoor dining has been implemented successfully in many countries including Australia, with evidence showing it doesn’t have a negative impact on business and often has a positive effect. It’s great to see businesses like Patagonia Chocolates supporting the majority of New Zealanders who are non-smokers” said Sarah Berger.
