Tilt the odds in your favour

Tilt the odds in your favour

Meet Swibo: a company from Wellington, New Zealand that fuses physiotherapy with active gaming in a way that significantly increases compliance rates in the often monotonous task of doing physio exercises.

The Swibo Tilt system uses a lightweight balance board and the user’s smartphone to gamify balance training. Primarily used for injury prevention and rehabilitation, balance training particularly targets some of the most common and debilitating injuries such as ACL injuries and falls. The smartphone measures the player’s movements on the board, which are used to control the games on the computer. Now you can do your exercises while racing through space, explore puzzling new worlds, or defend your friends from ravenous zombie-bears.

“We wanted to make it easier for people to carry out their physiotherapy exercises and recover properly, and realised playing games can be a powerful incentive,” says Benjamin Dunn, CEO of Swibo.

“The system was originally developed to help physiotherapists and sports trainers track their athlete’s exercises and improvements, providing tailored training as they progress.”

The system, already used by professional sports trainers, could also extend beyond this use, says Benjamin.

“A lot of people can benefit from these kinds of exercises, including the elderly, those with disabilities, or children. Balance training is helpful to help prevent injuries before they even occur, or for people who just want to be a little bit more active and have fun gaming.”

The team are already developing more games and hope to begin bulk manufacturing of the boards through their recently launched Kickstarter campaign.

“We see the potential to make a real difference with Tilt and are excited for people to start using it and seeing its benefits. Our top sponsors also have the opportunity to have a say in the design of our games” says Benjamin.
