Former national cycling champion praises Revbox Erg

Former national cycling champion praises Revbox Erg for getting him back on track
9 January 2016

Former National road cycling champion Gordon McCauley says the Revbox Erg played a vital role in getting him back racing at an elite level within six months of an horrific potentially career ending crash.

McCauley, a former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in the time trial, five time national champion and two time Tour of Southland winner, broke his leg in early 2014 and was told he would never race at an elite level again but he paid tribute to the Revbox Erg stressing the important role it played that saw him back racing and winning at a club level only four months after the crash and lining up in elite races two months after that.

The 44 year old Auckland based rider broke his right leg and smashed his left kneecap after hitting a fence during a race, by far the worst injuries he had ever suffered in a 27-year race career, but being told he would never race at an elite level again only fired him up to prove those predications wrong.

“By August in 2014 I was so far ahead of where I was told I’d be,” he says. “And I was stoked to be proving the early predictions wrong and there is no doubt the Revbox played a very important part in my rehabilitation.”

“I used the Revbox a lot during my recovery from breaking my legs, and as a coach and elite racer I fully appreciate the value a great training tool like the Revbox can bring to a riders performance.”

“After the crash in early 2014 that broke my left patella, right fibula and badly shattered my right tibia I began riding my bike seven weeks after what was definitely the worst crash of my career and fifteen weeks after the crash I won Auckland’s most important race the Gallipoli Cup.”

Gordon put a vast amount of his recovery focus into hours on the Revbox Erg stationary trainer as he virtually had to teach himself to pedal again, and that was where he says the Revbox had huge benefits.

“Getting my peddling action going again meant I had to rebuild strength in both legs and in this capacity the Revbox was perfect,” he says. “The Revbox and its low inertia means you are working through the whole pedal stroke which is great to build strength again and it really improves your pedalling action by listening to the sound of the machine.”

After reaping the benefits of the Revbox Erg McCauley is the latest athlete and coach to join Revbox New Zealand as a brand ambassador, something he says he had no hesitation in accepting.

“I’m riding proof of what can be achieved with the Revbox,” he says. “There’s no doubt there are loads of stationary trainers on the market but the Revbox stands alone as a no nonsense, get out of it what you put in to it sort of trainer that really kicks arse; quite simply it’s a weapon, a weapon that can really make a difference to performance no matter what level you ride at.”
