National guest nights for December 2015 were 6.2 percent higher than in December 2014, Statistics New Zealand said today.

"Guest nights in December were higher in both main islands, compared with December 2014," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said. "Rises were also recorded for domestic guest nights, international guest nights, and guest nights for all four accommodation types."

For December 2015, compared with December 2014:

• North Island guest nights were up 5.1 percent, and South Island guest nights were up 7.6 percent.

• Domestic guest nights were up 6.3 percent, and international guest nights were up 6.0 percent.

• 11 of the 12 regional areas had more guest nights.

• All four accommodation types had more guest nights.

For the year ended December 2015, national guest nights were up 4.7 percent from the December 2014 year.

The trend for national guest nights continued to rise in December. Seasonally adjusted guest nights rose 1.6 percent, following a similar rise in November.

The Accommodation Survey collects data for guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
