Top honour for Newton Forrest at 2016 Royal Easter Show

Top honour for Newton Forrest at 2016 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards

Heritage Rose Bowl Trophy awarded to Newton Forrest ‘Cornerstone’

Newton Forrest took a top honour over the weekend, winning the Heritage Rose Bowl at this year’s Royal Easter Show Wine awards, for its 2013, 2006 and 2002 ‘Cornerstone’. A blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec, ‘Cornerstone’ was first produced from the 1994 vintage.

The Heritage category recognises three vintages of the same wine that have developed grace and complexity over time. Bob Newton, Managing Director of Newton Forrest, commented on the importance of the category in demonstrating the ageability of New Zealand wines. “With so many of New Zealand’s wines having the ability to age, it’s vital we tell this story. This trophy demonstrates that having the patience to cellar wine will reward the drinker.”

Made from grapes grown at their Cornerstone vineyard in the heart of the famed Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District®, Bob added that the Trophy is further recognition of the District’s ability to consistently produce wines of exceptional quality. “Gimblett Gravels® wines took home an incredible five Trophies at the Royal Easter Show. With the Heritage Trophy rewarding the consistency of a single wine over a 10 year period, it shows the remarkable ability of Gimblett® Gravels wines to go the distance.”
