Software company wants architects seeking careers

Thinking of a career in architecture? Then think Revit

Architects are in serious demand across New Zealand, but recruiting experts Hays says those with Revit skills hold the trump card. According to Hays, demand for New Zealand architects with Revit skills is so high that professionals at any level with experience using the software quickly secure a role.

In the latest Hays Quarterly Report, the recruiter notes there has been an increase in permanent roles for Architects as more projects come online – and most employers want candidates with Revit skills.

“Revit is the software of the future for architecture, yet New Zealand has a shortage of people with Revit experience,” says Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand. “Many key employers within the industry have already made the switch to Revit and therefore require candidates with even a basic understanding of the software.

“We expect demand for candidates with proficiency in this area will only continue to grow.

“We have been assisting employers with a number of hard to fill Revit Technician and Revit Architect roles. Once placed these candidates tend to stay in the role for a significant amount of time, which also increases competition for the remaining candidates with Revit skills,” says Jason.

According to the Hays Quarterly Report, apart from Revit skills employers are also looking for architecture professionals with good communication skills. As Jason explains, “We are seeing firms place increasing focus on their company culture particularly given most have open floor plans and need employees that can interact well together. Employers will often opt to hire a candidate who is a better cultural fit over another with better qualifications but who is a poorer fit.

“Communication is a big part of fit and candidates need to be willing to really get involved with the practice,” he said.

Intermediate Technicians and Senior Architects are also sought in Auckland, says Jason, given the construction boom.

In other trends, the Hays Quarterly Report notes that despite a shortage of candidates employers have a strong preference for those with New Zealand experience and most companies remain reluctant to hire from overseas.

Employers also prefer to hire on a permanent rather than temporary basis.

Another trend of note is the increased need for Architects with strong interpersonal and communication skills who can contribute to creating a positive work culture in a firm.
