Helen Kelly to be acknowledged at NZ’s workplace safety awards

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 4 April 2016

Former CTU president Helen Kelly will receive a Lifetime Achievement award at the New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards 2016 gala dinner on 25 May.

The winners in each of the competitive categories will be announced at the same time.

Awards judging panel convenor Peter Bateman, who is editor of Safeguard magazine, says the judges are delighted to take this opportunity to acknowledge
Helen Kelly’s efforts over many years to champion the health, safety and working conditions of people in some of New Zealand’s riskiest industry sectors.

“As a union leader Helen has been at the forefront of efforts to secure good quality work, not only for union members but for all New Zealanders at work. Safe working conditions and meaningful worker participation in health and safety have always been first on the list of her definition of good work.”

“Even after illness forced her premature retirement from the CTU, she has continued to be active in shining a light on poor health and safety arrangements in multiple industries, and in urging change for the better.”

An interview with Helen Kelly appears in the March/April edition of Safeguard published this week.
