Sales Boom for Airborne’s Authenticated Manuka Honeys

Sales Boom for Airborne’s Authenticated Manuka Honeys

Airborne, New Zealand’s oldest and most technically advanced honey company, is reporting 50 percent annual sales growth for their premium Manuka Honey Health range as consumers choose product that authenticates that the contents of the jar are true to the botanical variety, natural and undamaged by heat, says Sales and Marketing Manager, John Smart.

“We’re seeing very strong and sustained growth domestically and internationally for our 70+ and 80+ Manuka honeys which we attribute to discerning consumers looking for genuine Manuka honey,” he said.

Airborne introduced a proprietary, world leading online quality assurance tool, TraceMe during 2014 which allows consumers to scan the QR code on the label to look up batch specific details about the contents of their honey jar and also see that the honey is undamaged by heat. TraceMe takes users to a map of New Zealand, pinpointing the location of the apiaries as well as measuring key varietal parameters for mono-floral honeys like Manuka including: pollen percentage, total pollen, colour, conductivity, glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose and HMF. “This technology allows complete transparency so people know they are not buying counterfeit or blended Manuka honey,” said Mr Smart. “Our sales show consumers are searching out our brand now as one they can trust.”

Airborne Honey adheres to the internationally accepted CODEX standard of determining the honey variety, applying the strict measures to nine of the mono-floral honey varieties it sells. The company has a state of the art laboratory on site where thousands of samples and tens of thousands of measurements are taken, analysed and recorded every year to determine the honey packed is true to variety and true to label.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), meanwhile, is running a science project to identify characteristics and markers that could be used to define robust, reliable and internationally acceptable guidelines for Manuka honey to unite the divided New Zealand industry and provide assurance of authenticity to consumers.
