Take the Time to Talk Campaign

Take the Time to Talk Campaign

The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) are launching their first national public education campaign today. Take the Time to Talk aims to encourage New Zealanders to discuss their last wishes and life stories with the ones they love.

Take the Time to Talk is designed to help start conversations among family, whanau, friends – the people in your community - to talk about life, what matters most, and what is valued. When the time comes, this conversation can be translated to plan the most meaningful gathering to remember and celebrate a person’s life.

“Sitting down with loved ones to talk about your life can be a rich and satisfying experience,” said Katrina Shanks, FDANZ Chief Executive. “This campaign isn’t just about planning funerals, it’s about sharing the memorable events, people, places and favourite activities, values and lessons learnt in your life.”

These discussions can help bring people closer to those they care about most. The talk also helps family reaffirm to their loved ones how much they have impacted their life.

Most people want to know that they, in some way, made a difference in this world. Talking can help reacquaint families with their loved ones and help them get to know their family members in a new and different way.

The desire for simplicity with regards to one’s own final arrangements is very common. Recognizing loved ones’ fundamental need to remember, gather and celebrate their life and achievements is the key to understanding why this talk is extremely important.

Take the Time to Talk does not have to be a one-time occurrence. Rather, it is the beginning of a dialogue during which families can openly talk about a number of things – from reflecting on the past to planning for the future.

The topics discussed may also be helpful when making important decisions in the future about how they wish to remember and celebrate their loved ones.
