Federated Farmers supports proposed pest control regulations

Federated Farmers supports proposed pest control regulations

Federated Farmers welcomes Environment Minister Hon Nick Smith’s proposed national pest control regulations under the Resource Management Act (RMA), announced today.

The proposed RMA regulations are in response to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment’s report - that recommends a more standard approach to pest control.

Federated Farmers Pest Control spokesperson Chris Allen says the proposed regulations would make the process of dealing with pests clearer and simpler and that avoiding duplication and different rules would ensure a streamlined national approach controlled by the Environmental Protection Authority.

"It makes better use of the levy farmers pay for pest control and I would like to thank the Minister for taking a pragmatic approach on the issue," says Mr Allen.

"It’s important that 1080 continues to be used responsibly by everyone involved in its use, from manufacturers to end users."

Mr Allen says that 1080 is an important tool for New Zealand’s biodiversity and farm production.
