More jobs for Kiwis in Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown

Data released today by SEEK shows that there were 8.9 per cent more jobs advertised across New Zealand on SEEK in May 2016 than 12 months ago.

Industries that showed strong year on year job ad volumes and growth across New Zealand were;
• Marketing and Communications, up 33 per cent
• Trades and Services, up 17 per cent
• Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics, up 15 per cent

SEEK NZ General Manager Janet Faulding said that it is very interesting to see how different industries are driving growth across the country.

In Auckland SEEK New Job Ads were up 9.5 per cent in May compared to 12 months ago.

Industries that have shown strong year on year job ad growth across Auckland are;
• Construction – up 39 per cent
• Marketing and Communication – up 31 per cent
• Trades and Services – up 24 per cent.

“It’s no surprise that Construction and related industries are continuing to drive job ad growth in Auckland. Across the city there are a number of major construction projects underway, including the new rail link build and the fitout of the Waterview Connection twin tunnels. Plus there is an increase in multi-story residential developments being undertaken,” Faulding said.

Wellington’s new job ads increased in by 9.8 per cent year on year in May, the top performing industries were:
• Marketing and Communications up 63 per cent
• Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics, up 40 per cent
• Construction up 30 per cent

“It’s great to see that there is growth in job opportunities coming from a variety of industries in Wellington. Large employing industries for the city include Trades and Services, Government, and Admin and Office Support, which are also showing really positive double digit growth year on year,” Faulding said.

Heading into the depth of New Zealand winter, SEEK took a look at how the Queenstown and Wanaka employment markets were looking. Both markets displayed healthy job ad growth, with job ad numbers up on SEEK for all but four industries. Job opportunities in the area reflect the strength of the property and tourism market through the Central Lakes area.

Industries in Queenstown and Wanaka that have boomed over the last 12 months include;
• Construction
• Trades and Services
• Hospitality and Tourism
• Retail and Consumer Products

“The Queenstown and Wanaka region is fast becoming a year-round tourist destination, so facilities and amenities are required to support the population influx, and as a result we’re seeing more jobs advertised on SEEK to support these developments,” Faulding explained.

“A major construction project recently completed in the area was the runway upgrades at Queenstown Airport to allow night flights to land. Other development projects taking place across the region include improvements to the wastewater treatment in the Wakatipu Basin and housing and accommodation construction or revamps, which are stimulating the Construction industry and helping grow tourism in the area, as well as the local economy,” Faulding continued.

When you look at what people are earning in these industries across Queenstown and Wanaka, the average salaries are $87,941 for Construction jobs, $54,761 for Trades & Services, $56,920 for Hospitality & Tourism roles, and $44,818 for jobs in the Retail industry.

CANDIDATE AVAILABILITY

At a national level there has been a small decrease in the SEEK Employment Index, which points to more favourable conditions for hirers as there are slightly more applications for each role. Canterbury is experiencing the greatest application volume per job out of all the regions.

“It’s important for job seekers in a hirer’s market, especially in Canterbury, to have an up-to-date SEEK profile to help them get noticed by prospective employers because they’re applying for jobs in a highly competitive market,” Faulding said.
