Tex Edwards & KLR Announce Exit from 2degrees
7 July 2016

Tex Edwards’ comments

I have now ended a 16 year assignment in NZ telecommunications – it’s taken longer than I thought.

“I originally turned up for a 3 month trip to NZ and hoped to on sell my stake in the project, it’s taken me 15 years, I got there, it’s been a hell of a ride, cripes it was an adventure. I have grey hair now. I learnt that Humour is the DNA of perseverance along the way.”

“I can recommend the industry to young people starting their careers, the next 15 years in the telecommunications industry will be dominated by big data, 24/7 connectivity of everything and total digital transformation of business, government, sports and social systems. The internet of things is here now.”

“It’s going to get exciting again! with the telco industry re-inventing itself all over again as it did when competitive GSM was introduced in the early 90s. To make big things happen, lots of people have to do their bit and new skills have to be developed.”

“Teamwork is the essential skill in this industry – it’s a fabulous industry to participate in. Everyone gets a buzz from their contribution to make big things happen.”

“Wellington based telco officials need acknowledgement. I am sure I have sounded like a broken record on various visits to the capital to try and initiate central government change. In almost any industry it’s important that New Zealand competition settings are benchmarked with international best practise. Thank you to the people in Wellington who listened, laughed and engaged. Public policy makes a difference in most industries.”

“I need to thank Trilogy International Partners’ Brad Horwitz and John Stanton for buying me out, and all the friends and colleagues who have supported me on the journey. Strive Masiyiwa’s Econet group needs special thanks; the inspiration delivered to me from the team in Harare, London, Gaborone, Johannesburg and Lagos was extraordinary. Too many people forget how great ideas and great entrepreneurs come from Zimbabwe.”

“It’s no more Hakas from me on telco! Hopefully I have done what I said I would do. I am going to Waiheke to get some sleep and then start over again.”

“It’s the next project time now new deals are already flowing into the in box and I am hunting out a few more too.”
