Robins Return Thanks to Boost from Local Business

Robins Return Thanks to Boost from Local Business

Six years ago, Christchurch-based clothing company Chalkydigits sponsored the relocation of a small group of South Island robins to predator-free Chalky Island in Fiordland. Chalkydigits recently returned to monitor the robins’ progress.

Christchurch, 8 June 2016 – Since the release of a small group of South Island robins on remote Chalky Island six years ago, the robin population has flourished, thanks to the help and support of Chalkydigits.

“We’re ecstatic about the result,” said Liz Collins, founder and Creative Director of Chalkydigits. “The robins are so plentiful now, they’ll be used in establishing populations on other bird sanctuaries. It’s more than we could have hoped for.”

Liz Collins said Chalkydigits chose to sponsor this project because of the South Island robins’ importance to New Zealanders. “These are iconic birds,” Collins said. “Who doesn’t have a childhood memory of a robin? We’re dedicated to protecting them.”

Chalkydigits has partnered with the Department of Conservation and the Fiordland Conservation Trust on the robin relocation project. Although South Island robins aren’t on the IUCN’s list for threatened species, they are under threat from loss of habitation and the introduction of predators, such as stoats and rats.

“We’re extremely grateful for Chalkydigits’ ongoing support of conservation projects,” said Fiordland Conservation Trust Chair Kim Hollows. “It’s wonderful to see a local business giving back, wanting to make a difference.”

The South Island robin relocation project is one of many conservation efforts Chalkydigits has been involved in since its inception. For the past 16 years, Chalkydigits has been quietly walking the conservation talk. The company donates its time, energy and 5% of its web and flagship store sales to small, localised conservation projects that often fly under the radar.

"We’re passionate about New Zealand,” Liz Collins said. “We have such a special place here, and it's up to New Zealanders to protect it. We certainly couldn’t do what we do without our loyal Chalky customers. They understand the importance of supporting local conservation efforts, as well as local, New Zealand-made brands. Because of our customers, we’re able to give back to the incredible landscapes that inspire us.”

Chalkydigits invites people to sign up to their email newsletter (www.chalkydigits.co.nz) to stay updated on the South Island robins and other conservation projects underway or to find out how to get involved.
