Coresteel launch innovation award for Waikato engineers
Encouraging innovation in the next generation of engineers is the goal for a new $5000 award which was launched this month by commercial construction company Coresteel Buildings.
The Coresteel Buildings Innovation Award is targeted specifically to fourth-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) students studying at the University of Waikato.
“Innovation is at the heart of every Coresteel project and we aim to push the boundaries on a daily basis. Coresteel’s parent company Donovan Group is a major player in the advancement of steel technologies and software development. Therefore promoting innovation in Waikato University’s engineering students is a great fit for the company,” says Kyle Donovan, Director of Donovan Group and University of Waikato alumna.
The award is open to all students enrolled in the cornerstone paper - ENGG492: Honours Research and Management Project. The paper is completed in the final year of study, and requires students to work individually or as part of a group to take an engineering research project from concept to completion.
“This paper relies heavily on innovation and includes tasks such as computer aided design, prototype development and failure analysis, all which require a great deal of planning and research,” says Dr Graeme Glasgow, ENGG492 paper coordinator, University of Waikato.
To be eligible for the award students are required to submit a 300 word summary detailing how their project demonstrates innovation excellence. Applications close on 1 October and the winner will be announced at the university’s Engineering Design Show prize giving.
Coresteel Buildings is a New Zealand-owned company which constructs commercial and industrial steel frame buildings. The Coresteel Buildings franchise network is owned by Donovan Group NZ Ltd. From their base in Whangarei, Donovan Group provides design and engineering services, and manufactures the steel frames used in all Coresteel projects.
