The first insider’s guide to NZ's best graduate employers

The first insider’s guide to the best graduate employers in New Zealand

The graduate employment market is booming in New Zealand and competition is fierce amongst employers vying to attract the best graduate talent around the country.

Auckland, 19th July: The first annual Top 50 Graduate Employers Guide has identified 50 employers who are highly desired by the current graduate cohort.

The New Zealand Top 50 Graduate Employers Guide, produced by Talent Solutions, represents the findings from a nationwide survey of over 1,000 tertiary students. The guide is designed as an educational resource to inform students about their career industry of choice, the types of graduate roles available, and highlights the leading employers within each industry sector.

Seren Wilson, Principal Consultant for Talent Solutions says the reason for the guide is that “it can be overwhelming for graduates trying to identify the best employers recruiting from their field of study. The Top 50 Graduate Employers Guide provides a key reference point for students thinking seriously about their employment prospects after University”.

The guide breaks down the youth employment market by industry. The top companies in each industry sector are highlighted alongside key industry statistics such as salaries and average weekly working hours. The engineering sector offered the highest graduate salaries in New Zealand, while graduate jobs in the legal industry recorded the highest average weekly working hours.

As well as showcasing employers, the Top 50 guide also provides students and graduates with trade tested advice on how to secure internships and graduate roles. Over 60% of students now actively apply for internships, clerkships or summer programmes, and as Seren Wilson from Talent Solutions comments – the remaining 40% should be thinking hard about accessing these opportunities as well.

“Work experience is highly desired by employers as it provides students with valuable skills, the opportunity to go through an interview process, build a CV and start making that critical transition from University life to a corporate job”.

For those worried about where their arts degree might take them, industries including IT, Government, FMCG, Corporate, Banking, Insurance and Financial Services all offer opportunities across a range of specialisations including Bachelor of Arts degrees.

The survey results were gathered through independent research provider Talent Solutions, a company who specialise in youth recruitment research and youth programme development across the New Zealand employment market.

Talent Solutions works with Australasia’s leading youth employers to optimise employer return on investing in talent. Developing and evaluating best practice attraction, selection, engagement, development and retention strategies.

Understanding the perspectives of youth in the graduate market gives employers the opportunity to better engage and recruit top talent. This, in turn, improves the youth employment market and incentivises graduates to transition into New Zealand based employment opportunities.

Alongside physical distribution across tertiary campuses, the Top 50 Graduate Employer Guide can be found online at www.top50graduateemployers.co.nz.
