Holiday arrivals rise 15,300 from June 2015

Visitor arrivals numbered 196,200 in June 2016, setting a new June record, Statistics New Zealand said today. Visitor arrivals were up 11 percent from June 2015, due mainly to a 21 percent increase in holiday arrivals.

"A large increase of holiday-makers was driven by visitors from Australia, the United States, and China," population statistics manager Jo-Anne Skinner said. "There were 15,300 more holiday-makers in June 2016 than in June 2015."

In the June 2016 year, visitor arrivals hit a record 3.31 million, up 11 percent from the June 2015 year.

New Zealand residents depart on 2.46 million trips in June 2016 year

New Zealand residents took a record 2.46 million overseas trips in the June 2016 year, up 6 percent from the June 2015 year. This increase of 128,800 trips was driven by residents departing for Australia, Fiji, and the United Kingdom.

In the month of June 2016 New Zealand residents made 239,400 trips overseas, up 8 percent from June 2015. More trips to Australia, China, Cook Islands, and Viet Nam were the biggest changes. Visits to Viet Nam were boosted by the addition of direct flights between Auckland and Ho Chi Minh City, which started in June 2016.

Annual net gain of migrants now a record 69,100

New Zealand's unadjusted annual net gain of migrants reached 69,100 in the June 2016 year, a new high. Annual net gains in migration from Australia also continued (1,900 migrants).

Seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain (more arrivals than departures) of 5,700 migrants in June 2016. Since reaching a peak of 6,200 in November 2015, the seasonally adjusted net gain in migrants has averaged 5,700 a month.

While New Zealand citizens still show a net loss, they are significant in determining current record net gains in migration – because they dominate both migrant arrivals and departures.
