Choosing bold design the right thing, says Chamber

Wellington City councillors have done the right thing in opting for the bolder, though more expensive, design for The Movie Museum and Convention Centre, says Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

“The city has to think boldly if it’s going to move forward, and it has to think boldly if it’s going to compete in both the convention and tourist markets, and this spectacular design is about thinking boldly,” says Chief Executive John Milford.

“It’s exactly the sort of decision that will help take our economy forward, and from which everyone can benefit.

“This building will be instantly recognisable and that should greatly aid in promoting what’s inside it.

“The public and the business sector have shown in recent surveys that they are right behind this venture, and I’m sure they will back this extra step.

“The Chamber would still like to see an updated and ongoing business case, there must be accountability for the information in the business case and rational decision-making focusing on the needs and capacity of Wellington, and the council must be accountable for managing the increased level of debt the project will incur.

“And then once the Convention Centre is up and running we would like its performance to be one of WREDA’s key performance indicators to ensure it is used to full capacity.

“As long as those caveats are met then this could prove to be a real jewel in our landscape.”
