Urban planning problems carefully considered

BusinessNZ has welcomed the Productivity Commission’s draft review of urban planning rules.

BusinessNZ Chief Executive Kirk Hope says the report identifies key problems with current urban planning, and makes useful recommendations.

"The Productivity Commission recognises the problem of too much unnecessary regulation. BusinessNZ agrees with this. Planning processes in many areas have delivered over-detailed, over-the-top rules that are holding back urban development. In many areas better planning - and less planning - would achieve better outcomes.

"BusinessNZ will consider the draft review in detail and make a submission on its recommendations, and we would urge other interested parties to do the same.

"This draft report could hold the potential for resolving many current problems relating to urban planning in Auckland and other centres. It would be helpful if the outcome of this Productivity Commission review was a wide, multi-party agreement on the way forward for urban planning in New Zealand."
