Southern Discoveries appoints new sales manager for East Asia

Award-winning tourism company Southern Discoveries has appointed tourism marketing and hospitality specialist Charles Yuan as East Asia sales manager.

Yuan has more than a decade of experience in the greater China market having previously held sales management positions in some of the world’s largest hospitality companies specialising in business relations with China.

Director of Sales and Marketing Julia Savill is delighted to welcome Charles to the team.

“Charles is a dynamic, forward-thinking and accomplished business development professional who will be a great addition to our sales and marketing team.”

Yuan will be based in Auckland and work alongside Cecil Potatau, Southern Discoveries’ International Sales Manager for Asia.

Mr Potatau said Charles’s appointment couldn’t have come at a better time for Southern Discoveries with the Chinese speaking markets continuing to grow.

“Charles has great enthusiasm and passion for the role and I’m excited to work with him.”

Yuan is fluent in English and Mandarin and has industry experience and cross-cultural background that makes him well placed to help grow the East Asia market for Southern Discoveries.

“I’m hugely excited about this role as I have a proven track record in the Chinese market building solid rapport with business partners and stakeholders,” said Yuan.

“Having worked with outbound tour operators in China and inbound tour operators in New Zealand, I understand what it takes for businesses to win over customers and to stay competitive.”

Mr Yuan’s most recent role was as a sales consultant at the Hamilton i-SITE Visitor Centre where he led the development of the first-ever Chinese language visitor website for Hamilton City Council.

Before that, he spent two years as business development manager for a public company with a range of luxury resorts throughout South-East Asia. He set up the company’s head office and sales centre in Shanghai, followed by the successful rollout of a lead generation and sales programme in the greater China region.
