Ready to temp? Temporary job opportunities increasing in New Zealand

The number of temporary and contract jobs will continue to rise in New Zealand, according to recruiting experts Hays.

Based on findings in the 2016 Hays Salary Guide, 21% of employers expect to increase their use of temporary and contract staff over the next 12 months, which exceeds the 12% who plan to decrease their use of such staff.

Hays points out this will not be at the expense of permanent jobs, since 44% of employers will also increase their permanent staff levels over the coming year – far more than the 8% who plan to decrease them.

“Candidates are aware that strong job opportunities are on offer, both temporary and permanent,” says Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand.

“This is positive news for New Zealand’s jobseekers and anyone who wants to advance their career in the months ahead. While many people prefer the security of a permanent role, there are a lot of professionals who value the wider industry exposure, skills development, expanded network, new system exposure and deepened expertise that temporary assignments provide,” he said.

These people will welcome the news that 26% of New Zealand employers now employ temporary and contract staff on a regular ongoing basis. A further 46% said they use them for special projects or workloads.

“No longer used primarily for headcount flexibility, one quarter of employers now employ temporaries and contractors to be part of and support an existing team, help out with existing projects or to add particular expertise to a department,” says Jason.
