Iconic Auckland suburb undergoing transformation

Iconic Auckland suburb undergoing transformation

Auckland’s iconic suburb of Mount Eden is undergoing unprecedented change that will further lift its profile and prestige.

September 21, 2016 - Auckland’s iconic suburb of Mount Eden is poised for a major face lift with the rise of high quality residential apartments, improved public transport and an influx of new retail and commercial outlets.

Colliers International is at the forefront, with involvement in three major residential projects which will see the addition of 175 apartment homes to the area, at the time of an unprecedented housing shortage in Auckland.

National director of Residential Project Marketing Pete Evans says Botanica, Botanica Heritage and Miro will transform Mount Eden into what will feel like a new suburb for its residents.

“It is exciting for us to be involved with such high quality, design led developments that promise to change the face of a mixed use group of buildings to become one of the most desirable and interesting places to live in the inner city.”

Botanica, by Residentiae, saw spectacular success in 2015, with all 67 apartments sold out in six weeks. Residentiae’s subsequent development plans for Botanica Heritage has seen 14 apartments, loft and warehouse style conversions of a heritage building almost sold out, with only a couple remaining for sale.

Miro, a 95 apartment development by XCJ, is more than 80% sold out with less than 15 apartments remaining for sale. According to Pete Evans, all of the projects are anticipated for completion between mid to late 2017.

“All of the three developments include commercial, retail and cafe amenity, with one in Miro, one in Botanica Heritage and three in Botanica. This will really change the look and feel of Enfield Street, with brand spanking new premises for the locals and visitors to enjoy.

“These developments also encourage business and civic activities in the area. Mount Eden is one of the most sought after suburbs in Auckland, with only four kilometres to Auckland CBD. It is perfectly placed on the city fringe, close to reserves and Mount Eden’s village centre and shops.”

Several other residential developments in the area add to this hum of activity, including but not limited to Eden Green (100 apartments), Nugent Rise (92 apartments) SKHY and SKHY TWO developments on Khyber Pass Road in Grafton.

“There are further developments planned for sites in Enfield Street and Normanby Road, which are tagged for residential development under the Auckland Unitary Plan. The refurbished terrace housing developments in Normanby Road, Enfield Street and Mary Street are coming out from under scaffolding and are leasing at a rapid rate.”

The streetscape in Enfield Street near the Mary Street junction is undergoing planned transformation, funded by developers of the surrounding projects. Residentiae and XCJ Group are committed to improving footpaths, planting trees and installing street lighting. Apartments on the corner of Akiraho Street and Mount Eden Road have also undergone recladding, enhancing the appeal of the area further.

“Mount Eden is shaping up to be a premium residential spot for Aucklanders, and contributing significantly towards brining supply at a time of a crippling housing shortage. Several astute businesses are also taking up the opportunity to be a part of this transformation.”

Lion Nathan has opened the Good Home public house and restaurant on Normanby Road, Brothers Brewery and Juke Joint BBQ have opened in Akiraho Street, and boutique retailers such as Father Rabbit, Bloc Cafe, Tim Webber Design are part of BLOC retail along with Bo Concept and Citta Design, with an additional Citta Design outlet store across the street on Normanby Road.

“Mount Eden is humming with activity. There is the Sabato food and farmers markets on the weekends, Horse and Trap pub have renovated their premises, Sen restaurant has replaced C.A.C and our combined developments Miro, Botanica and Botanica Heritage will bring four additional commercial spaces to Enfield Street.”

The properties provide ‘doorstep access’ to a range of bus and train connections, with Mount Eden playing a key role in the operational success of the City Rail Link, which will change Auckland’s entire public transport system. The project promises two new underground stations at Aotea and Karangahape Road, and a complete refurbishment of Mount Eden Station, to make it the second busiest station in Auckland, after Britomart.

“At this very moment in time, Auckland is experiencing unprecedented growth, which bring both immense opportunities and challenges. Changes such as what we are seeing in Mount Eden are the perfect example of seizing the opportunity to create world class inner city suburbs.”

“It is exciting times for Auckland city, as it becomes a truly cosmopolitan melting pot. At Colliers International, we are at the forefront of this transformation, through regenerating and creating great places for people to live close to first class local amenity.”

END.
