Picton Terminal back in full operation
The Interislander Ferry Terminal in Picton is back in full operation, allowing KiwiRail Interislander passenger services to return to normal for the first time since the Kaikoura earthquake.
Port of Marlborough’s terminal was damaged in the earthquake and has been operating on a restricted access basis.
Further assessment by engineers has now cleared the building, allowing passengers to access it as normal.
Interislander General Manager Operations Mark Thompson says the full re-opening of the terminal was an important step in keeping tourists moving into and out of Picton.
“We’re happy that things are getting back to business as usual. Tourism is really important to the region, and to the whole of the country, and KiwiRail plays a vital role in making that possible.
“KiwiRail moves more than 800,000 passengers across Cook Strait each year.
“The full re-opening of the terminal comes hard on the heels of the resumption of sailings by the Aratere for vehicles and passenger only, meaning all three ferries are back on the water. We expect rail wagons to be operating next week.”
