Gigcity Living Hub to Launch Next Month

An interactive community hub showcasing gigabit technologies plans to launch in the Dunedin City Library on Tuesday 13 December.

Supported by Chorus and the Dunedin City Council, the GigCity Living Hub is a key project in the Digital Community Trust’s Plan for Success – the framework that underpinned Dunedin’s win in the Chorus Gigatown competition.

The Hub aims to showcase the opportunities of having gigabit technology in the city in a space where the community can experience the technology first hand.

At the core of the Hub is a multi-screened cube which will feature a range of engaging and interactive AV content. The space will act as a learning environment where the community can experience interactive (teacher-led) classes, as well as trialling new technology.

Early Hub activity will include school visits, workshops, and interactive displays.

“We’re extremely proud of what we believe will become an important community asset – a technology hub located in the heart of the city,” says Digital Community Trust Chair John Gallaher.

“Powered by the Gig, the Hub will allow people to experience new technology as well as showcasing GigCity projects and Dunedin’s tech industry. And as people work more with the technology, they will be able to create new fresh content to ensure it remains relevant – a living resource for the community to own.”

Council Group Manager Arts and Culture Bernie Hawke says the addition of the Hub and its cutting edge technology will take the Library to a new level of digital engagement.

“This is the perfect location for the community to engage with new ways of learning and exploring our world. We believe the GigCity Living Hub will allow for a more direct involvement with the community as we attract new visitors, and new types of activity to our Library.”

Chorus’ Dunedin Liaison Manager Kim Stewart says the Hub project was one that stood out for Chorus during the Gigatown competition and the company was pleased to see it come to life.

“The Gig isn’t just about better performing Netflix in home, it’s about people coming together to make use of technology in delivering great outcomes for their communities. The unique learning environment, The Hub, offers will open up this opportunity in Dunedin, significantly expanding the reach of gigabit broadband and access to the new technologies that will take advantage of this capability.”

The Hub will be officially launched on 13 December at 4pm and open to the public from the morning of Wednesday 14 December.
