Crown Irrigation Invests $165,000 in Northland

Crown Irrigation Investments will invest $165,000 alongside the Northland Regional Council for the scoping of irrigation scheme options in the Northland region.

“The scoping study will focus on irrigation options in the mid North and Kaipara areas with the aim of identifying a small number of potential scheme options to take into a more detailed evaluation phase to access their feasibility.” said Murray Gribben, CEO of Crown Irrigation Investments.

“Northland can be described as a region of extremes with both intensive flooding and drought conditions. Three of the driest years on record have occurred in the last 10 years so the opportunity to generate increased economic wealth for Northland through the provision of reliable water to the agricultural sector is significant.” said Darryl Jones, Economist for the Northland Regional Council.

He added, “Once this work is completed towards the middle of next year, much more research, science and public discussion and consultation will still be required as we take a project forward.”

“Crown Irrigation is looking forward to working alongside the Northland Regional Council to assess the options available to the region and understand the potential economic benefits available. The provision of reliable water has been proven to add significant economic and environmental benefits to local regions and the New Zealand economy in other parts of the country.” said Mr Gribben

Because of this potential, the scoping study has been listed as an enabling project on the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan.

Crown Irrigation Investments provides both development funding and construction capital to irrigation schemes across New Zealand.
