Statistics New Zealand update for 6 December 2016

Statistics New Zealand update for 6 December 2016 – Media advisory

6 December 2016

Statistics NZ's website has been partially restored, following the 7.8 earthquake on 14 November 2016.

Statistics NZ resumed data releases from Monday, 21 November.

Infoshare outage Wednesday, 7 December

The Infoshare data service will be restored by Monday, 12 December, after computer systems recovery work is carried out.

This means Infoshare will be unavailable from 9am to 5pm on 7 December. We will advise customers if the length of the outage changes.

The recovery work is being carried out on a day when no new data is due for release, in an effort to minimise the disruption for users.

As a result, the following releases will include a media release, information release, Excel tables and CSV files, but the Infoshare and Export direct data services will not be available:

• 8 December: National Accounts (Income and Expenditure): Year ended March 2016

• 8 December: National Accounts (Industry Production and Investment): Year ended March 2016

(Infoshare data for National Accounts data should be made available by early next week.)

• 9 December: Electronic Card Transactions, November 2016

• 9 December: Local Authority Statistics, September 2016 quarter.

Background on Infoshare

Infoshare data has been affected during the restoration of computer systems following the 14 November earthquake. Some data is not currently available through Infoshare, but work is being done to provide figures through alternatives.

We continue to test the system as we work towards full recovery. We will advise customers as more information comes to hand.

Infoshare is a free-of-charge online tool that gives access to various time-series data, including economic data, births and deaths, arrival and departure figures, retail trade, exports and imports, and building consents.

Infoshare enables customers to find and download customised tables in Excel or comma separated variable (CSV) format.

Other releases

Overseas Merchandise Trade: October 2016 – modified release issued 25 November

OMT downloadable datasets for October 2016 are not currently available through Infoshare. More work is required before all trade data is available.

We are sorry for the delay.

However, some trade data in CSV form will be available soon.

Economic growth figures out by Christmas

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Balance of Payments (BOP) for the September quarter 2016, will both be published on 22 December.

Despite the significant disruption caused by the 7.8 magnitude quake last month, the publication of GDP has been delayed by just a week from the original pre-quake release date of 15 December. Balance of Payments was originally scheduled for release on 14 December.

See our release calendar for the latest update and we will advise if there are further changes. We will continue to update the calendar for customers to understand our latest publishing schedule.

Statistics NZ offices

Statistics NZ Wellington staff are unable to return to Statistics House, which was damaged by the severe 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 14 November 2016.

Some Statistics NZ staff moved in to a temporary office in HP House in Gilmer Tce, Wellington on Monday, 21 November. More staff will move into other floors in the same building over coming weeks.

On Friday, 25 November Statistics NZ announced it had agreed to lease its second temporary premises in Wellington. The new building is Westpac House, 318 Lambton Quay.

Statistics NZ will occupy three floors in Westpac House, which was built in the mid-1970s. Westpac House is 100 percent of building code. See Statistics NZ signs up for more space in Wellington for latest news about our accommodation.

There have been some media reports that Statistics House is to be demolished. These reports are false. With a government inquiry announced and engineering reports underway the reality is that we have no idea what the future holds for Statistics House.

We will provide further updates about the release calendar as information comes to hand.

For general enquiries: Please call our Information Centre for all other general enquiries on 0508 525 525 between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm.

For further enquiries about Statistics House, please contact CentrePort.
