Statement from Queensgate Shopping Centre

Statement from Queensgate Shopping Centre

19 December 2016

The process that was followed to assess the earthquake damage at Queensgate Shopping Centre, namely an initial assessment carried out within hours of the earthquake and a subsequent series of detailed examinations, is standard practice in situations such as the one experienced in November. The assessment and analysis of Queensgate was carried out methodically and professionally at all times.

The initial assessment identified that damage had occurred to the affected building and pointed clearly to the need for further examination. A series of assessments were then made by the Centre’s consultant engineers and these were peer reviewed by the Hutt City Council’s consultant engineers.

During this period the Centre remained closed for the safety of its tenants, employees and visitors.

We have been very pleased with the support we have received from our consultant engineers and the prudent, competent and cautious approach they have taken to their work. The consultant engineers we have commissioned are one of the most reputable engineering firms in New Zealand and have considerable expertise and experience in dealing with these types of situations. The process that was followed by all parties concerned in the assessment of the damage and the eventual outcome was thoroughly professional and carefully considered at each stage.
