Farewell to Dorothy Collis, after 45 years at the James Cook Hotel

In 1972 the country’s population was under 3 million, New Zealand Rowing Eight won Gold at the Munich Olympics and Dorothy (Dot) Collis commenced her career at the soon to be opened James Cook Hotel in Wellington. As one of New Zealand’s longest serving Hotel Employee’s, it is with great sadness we announce that Dot is moving to the next chapter of her life in February 2017.

From Guest Service Agent to managing the extensive Conference & Events business, Dot has seen the Hotel through times of change, challenges and certainty. This includes the technological era, refurbishments, economic downturns and the rise of Wellington as ‘the coolest little capital in the world’. Her professional and personable approach of delivering high-quality events has seen repeat business return year after year to the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor.

To celebrate Dot’s 45 years at the Hotel and to ensure she receives the send-off she deserves, an industry wide event will be held at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor Wellington, on Tuesday 21 February, 4-7pm. To RSVP to this event, please email marketing@jamescookhotel.co.nz

Reflecting on her career, Dot remembers her first day at the James Cook, in a uniform that was two sizes too big and the Hotel hosting the biggest Champagne splash in the Southern hemisphere. As for the next chapter, Dot is looking forward to time with all the friends she has gathered over the years, travel and keeping an eye on the industry which has been such an immense part of her successful career.

Her mantra and departing words of wisdom – ‘Our greatest asset is the customer. Treat each customer as if they are the only one’.
