ePress publishes highlights from Ethnic Migrant Media Forum
Unitec’s ePress publishes highlights from ground-breaking forum on the roles and condition of ethnic media in New Zealand
“The bridge between our minority communities and the general public is missing. Arguably, our communities remain ghettoised because of this.”
Lynda Chanwai-Earle, Radio New Zealand National
Our mainstream media face a challenge meeting the needs of the city’s growing ethnic population. Findings by Niche Media show that a significant proportion of ethnic groups prefers advertising in their own language and consume at least half their media in the same way. Our largest ethnic groups are well served by media in their own languages.
But how do mainstream media outlets compete for the ethnic audience and advertisers? And should they try?
The Ethnic Migrant Media Forum was a one-day event hosted by the Department of Communication Studies at Unitec Institute of Technology in 2014.
In this interactive publication, editors and forum organisers Evangelia Papaoutsaki and Elena Kolesova (Unitec) present the key themes and discussion from the forum, with curated panelist transcripts, a keynote speech from Dr. Ruth De Souza and a counterpoint essay by Dr Peter Thomson (Victoria University).
ePress is an open access online publisher, committed to publishing quality-assured scholarly research and discussion, making it available for use and dissemination by all.
