P³ is the mantra for Kiwi business in India

Ralph Hays, the newly appointed New Zealand Trade Commissioner and Consul General designate to Mumbai, India has called upon the Kiwi businesses to be ‘Patient, Persevere, Persistent’ when approaching the Indian market.

Welcoming the invited guests, PwC Partner Ravi Mehta, appreciated the work and insights that India Trade Alliance brings in the NZ India sector. ‘It’s important to have partners like ITA, who have first-hand knowledge and connections that are so vital in the Indian market,’ he said.

Speaking to a house full of NZ businesses at the interactive session organised at PwC Auckland by India Trade Alliance, Tony Martin, Regional Director for India, Middle East and Africa for NZTE encouraged the members to not only think about the commodity sector but also tap into the manufacturing drive ‘Make in India’ by the Indian government led by Hon Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ‘New Zealand businesses have an opportunity to tap into this initiative which is competitive and of world standards and provides NZ businesses another option to be cost effective and increase their bottom line’, he said.

Ralph shared his experience in his current roles as the Trade Commissioner in Sau Paulo, Brazil.

‘There are many similarities in the customer profiles between the Indian and Brazilian markets.

They have an appetite for Kiwi products and this appetite will only grow as the disposable income increases,’ he said. Too many times Kiwi businesses lose their interest because they do not get instant results or have enough capital to last the distance. Patience is required in large economies where the rest of the world wants the ‘piece of the pie’ too. In such competitive market, Kiwis who are known for their perseverance and persistent, need to be innovative and entrepreneurial in their approach.

Senior Business Development Manager for NZTE in Mumbai, Sreedhar Venkatram also joined in the Q&A session. Responding to the question on ‘What it takes to be successful in the Indian market’, Sreedhar gave the audience an insight into the ground reality of things that work for the Indian businesses. ‘Yes Cricket, Politics, Bollywood are important but also getting to know your customer and building trust using these tools is also important,’ he said. Sreedhar also gave an example of his daily work life balance in the hustle bustle of the Mumbai lifestyle.

Earlier welcoming guests and speakers on behalf of India Trade Alliance the Deputy Chairman Dr the Hon Richard Worth shared the various initiatives taken by India Trade Alliance that are all working towards building a bridge to bring New Zealand India Relationship – economically, culturally, scientifically, educationally. ‘ITA has been actively advocating, connecting and enabling our members into the Indian market and working alongside agencies as NZ Inc and our Indian partners to further the cause of NZ businesses in India,’ said Dr. Worth.

The evening concluded networking and positive feedback from the attendees who were well informed to the challenges and opportunities in ‘New India’.
